Seijinshiki
On Seijinshiki ("Coming-of-Age Day"), held the second Monday in January, men and women who turn twenty during the current academic year are ceremonially proclaimed legal adults. Nowadays, Seijinshiki is mostly an excuse for politicians to pontificate, women to dress up in lavish kimono, and everybody to party. The tradition originated with the kazoedoshi system, according to which a child was counted one year old at birth, and then a year older every January.
